Wells Fargo Rail is the largest and most diverse rail equipment operating lessor in North America, with more than 175,000 railcars and 1,800 locomotives. Based in Rosemont, IL, Wells Fargo Rail has the largest fleet of any rail operating lessor in North America, serving the North American market for rail equipment with customers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Mechanical lead responsible for strategic planning and setting rail asset investment direction.  Provides overall direction for new rail car specification requirements and for upgrade and modification programs on existing assets.  Works with sales team to identify car type investment opportunities.  Contributes to the senior management team in the development of business strategy. Provides feedback on asset maintenance policies and preventative maintenance plans. Ensures appropriate policies and procedures are in place so that Wells Fargo Rail (WFR) remains in compliance with AAR Rules and Recommended Practices and internal company policies and procedures. Manages mechanical reporting and communication for all OCC related compliance inquiries. Ensures participation and input to railroad industry rule-making committees and to US DOT (FRA) as required. Creates, reviews, modifies and interprets lease contract language primarily relating to casualty, maintenance, and return condition obligations in all lease contracts. Reviews potential portfolio purchases, evaluates  railcar and locomotive assets and lease contract terms, and makes mechanical recommendations on all purchase opportunities. Meets with customers and prospects and serves as Mechanical Department Liaison to the sales team on all complex mechanical issues.  Coordinates communication and strategy for all disputes and litigation associated with end of lease return condition issues. Ensures car hire rate agreements are achieved at appropriate rate levels.

They are accountable for execution of all applicable risk programs (Credit, Market, Financial Crimes, Operational, Regulatory Compliance), which includes effectively following, and adhering to all applicable Wells Fargo policies and procedures, appropriately fulfilling risk and compliance obligations, timely and effective escalation and remediation of issues, and making sound risk decisions. There is emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite and all risk and compliance program requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of rail mechanical experience

Desired Qualifications

  • A BS/BA degree or higher
  • Thorough knowledge of Association of American Railroads (AAR) Interchange Rules
  • Comprehensive knowledge of railroad operations, rail industry maintenance practices, railcar construction, railcar components, fleet management, customer service, lease contract negotiation and administration, budgeting and expense accounting
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) safety regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of Association of American Railroads (AAR) Code of Car Service and Car Hire Rules
