Solution Engineer, New Business Modernization

Role Summary

New York Life (NYL) is embarking on a multi-year program to implement a state of the art Life Insurance New Business & Underwriting platform (NBUW Modernization).  The program is the first joint effort between NYL’s Direct to Consumer and Agency Sold Life Insurance businesses, and critical to meeting several NYL business strategies.

The new platform will be comprised of software from two industry software providers, configured to meet the unique needs of New York Life and integrated to form a comprehensive solution.  The solution will deliver Application Intake, Evidence Management, Risk Assessment and Policy Fulfillment capabilities.  The capabilities delivered will provide substantially greater value to the NYL businesses, resulting in cost reductions and sales growth, while setting the foundation from which all future New Business & Underwriting endeavors will build on top of.

The Solution Engineer will work as part of high caliber team in the development of an integration layer that will orchestrate between the new vendor platform and a complex NYL technology ecosystem comprised of more than 100 services and applications.  The Solution Engineer will be responsible of designing and developing multiple integrations comprising of complex system, process and experience APIs.

We are looking for a highly organized problem solver with a track record of working collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team to deliver complex multi-million dollar software projects.  The individual must be skilled in communicating across work streams and project teams, across functional teams, and up to senior leaders. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Designs and codes software components, units, and modules that meet product specification and development schedules
  • Provides technical leadership and act as a resource for lower-level developers while ensuring that all testing and review activity is properly carried out
  • Analyzes functional and system level user stories, tasks and issues and conduct Sprint and Release planning and implements maintenance and feature sprints
  • Performs a variety of complicated tasks with a wide degree of creativity and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Works with the developers and systems engineers to solve critical problems and identify efficiencies in implementing technical and functional requirements and tasks
  • Works closely with product owners, stakeholders, business analysts, project managers, and other development teams to define the requirements and to create quality code
  • Assists with creating project resource estimates, metrics to track completion phase, defect reports, defect prevention, development efficiency and quality
  • Presents project specific detailed solution design to Solution Architect through Architecture Review process
  • Works closely with test teams to ensure effective test strategies to support technical implementation
  • Works with Domain Architects and Enterprise Architecture team to ensure standards and best practices are being adhered to
  • Proposes new technologies, new technical and architectural strategies, and new processes to meet business challenges, in full consideration of their costs and benefits.
  • Partners with Business stakeholders and IT Business Analysts and to review and understand business requirements
  • Provides insights and new ways of looking at the business and technology that contribute to the strategic plans and directions of NY Life.
  • Translates business requirements and conceptual architectural design into high-level solution design
  • Ensures the alignment of designs and solutions with the organization's business objectives and architectural standards, principles & patterns
  • Documents and reviews technical specifications with Systems Analysts
  • Coordinates with Systems Analyst to transform high-level solution design into detailed solution design
  • Provides technical guidance, training, direction and reviews the work of colleagues working on detailed design issues to ensure alignment. May provide input to manager on staff performance relating to technology but does not prepare or deliver reviews.
  • Supports initiatives through the entire solution delivery lifecycle from initial kickoff to production deployment, identifying potential technical risks and develops mitigation plans
  • Optionally supports Solution Architect in the evaluation and decision process of buy versus build, including packaged applications, SaaS and Cloud based offerings
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in assigned functional domain(s), technologies and applications
  • Identifies and suggests technical improvements in current systems
  • Works with Solution Engineers across NYL Technology that are building out or enhancing applications and solutions to provide mentorship, collaborate on the use of tools and methodology, and to share expertise to ensure scalable, quality end-to-end solutions that effectively solve business problems
  • Partners with Business stakeholders and Business Relationship Managers (BRMs) to review and understand business requirements
  • Translates business requirements and technical design requirements based on input from Business Analysts, Business Relationship Managers, and the Business itself into technical specifications and detailed design
  • Coordinates with Development (Technical) Lead and Solution Developers to transform overall project guidelines into technical requirements that clearly translate into code
  • Documents and reviews technical specifications with cross-functional teams
  • Facilitates and leads design review sessions and technical discussions
  • Supports the project through the entire software development lifecycle from initial kickoff to production deployment
  • Participates in commercial off-the-shelf product evaluation and selection
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in the assigned functional domain
  • Stays up-to-date on emerging trends and technologies and ensures that they are integrated into technical solutions whenever possible
  • Identifies and suggests architectural improvements in current systems

Education / Training

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science; equivalent work experience accepted
  • Preferred: Master's in Computer Science; equivalent work experience accepted

Required Skills / Knowledge

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to varying audiences, including non-technical business executives
  • Has designed systems/applications with high level of complexity (e.g. many interfaces, multiple packages, platforms)
  • App Dev or SOA Dev Experience: (5-10 years)
  • Service Design Experience: (2-5 years)
  • Solution and System integration architecture experience: (2-5 years)
  • Congenial, history of building consensus among competing interests
  • Strong XML schema experience, ACORD experience preferred
  • Strong Java / .NET / Web App experience
  • Strong experience with source control management
  • Strong Relational Database development experience, design experience preferred
  • Experience with continuous integration tools (eg. Jenkins)
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field and/or equivalent work experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • MBA or Master’s degree in a related field
  • High Tech, Life Insurance or Financial Services industry experience
  • Recent active member of an Agile development team
