Software Engineer II

Job Summary: ESPN is looking for a motivated Software Engineer to be a vital contributor to the company’s consumer facing digital video applications. This engineer will work closely with ESPN product owners and business development partners to plan, design, create and maintain applications that bring pay television and video highlights to ESPN’s many web sites and apps running on mobile phones, tablets, game consoles and set top boxes. The ideal candidate will have experience developing rich, consumer facing apps or web sites and core knowledge of at least one area of consumer application development preferably using Java, Objective C, Swift, Javascript or C# . This position will be located in the Bristol CT headquarters. Responsibilities:
  • Participate in the development, enhancement and maintenance of ESPN video apps and components for a variety of platforms including Phones, Tablets, Set Top Boxes and Game Consoles.
  • Work closely with ESPN consumer product owners and app design teams to specify, design and plan the development of new applications, improvement of existing products and development of special features.
  • Collaborate with software development teams that bring ESPN’s core brands to mobile, tablet and web platforms to create feature and experience parity across platforms.
  • Collaborate with other ESPN technology teams providing fundamental pieces of the digital video ecosystem including, content APIs, video workflow, encoding & distribution and configuration management.
  • Work closely with Project Management to plan project work for yourself and fellow team members in an agile fashion.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of relevant professional software development experience
  • Strong knowledge of at least one of the following - Java, Javascript, Objective C, Swift C# or C++.
  • A strong understanding of HTTP and REST-style web services
  • A strong understanding of XML or JSON
  • Highly motivated to work in a fast paced, team-oriented and iterative programming environment with a disposition for keeping up with latest technologies.
  • Solid organization/communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience building on a significant consumer app that is currently available in the marketplace
  • Experience developing applications that include audio or video content
  • Experience with agile software development practice, scrum, sprint planning, retrospectives, etc.
Required Education
  • Bachelor degree in computer science, engineering or related field
