Chemical ingredients are the core technology in our products, their functional performance critical to the value we drive for our consumers & patients. J&J Consumer’s Chemicals is a complex global category of >1500 materials, across 28 different sub-categories, supplied by ~600 suppliers, valued at $700MM (2018 Business Plan). The spend comes in two broad classes, each with 50%: 1) Base / Commodity Chemicals, and 2) Specialty Chemicals.

Through our 2018-20 Strategy & road-map driving scale & choice across our material portfolio and supplier footprint, the category aspires to deliver value to J&J through all-aspect spend performance (reliability, best / fair cost, compliance, sustainability, innovation), complexity reduction (portfolio and supplier footprint) its core enabler. The incumbent will identify value & performance improvement opportunities (cost reduction / avoidance, supplier & partnership development, dual sourcing, portfolio rationalization & scaling etc..) through sub-category & sourcing strategies, partnerships with suppliers and technical & supply chain partners, and finally through go-to-market initiatives, enabled by advanced tools. While both base & specialty chemicals are exposed to commodities (agro & petro), specialty is a more complex portfolio where scaled specifications, dual sourcing, complexity reduction, early stage ingredient choices in our formulations tend to be more impactful value enablers. Most innovations in ingredient technologies also tend towards the specialty chemicals space.

This specific position will be accountable for a portion of the Specialty Chemicals spend (~$60-80MM) in the form of allotted sub-categories e.g. Preservatives, Actives & Naturals, Sunscreens etc. The scope of responsibility will cover four broad areas:

  • Global accountability to strategize & manage all-aspect performance of allotted sub-categories
  • Global Supplier Relationship Management (GSRM) ownership for a sub-set of suppliers (possibly across sub-categories)
  • Partner with NA and LATAM Consumer SC Procurement team on execution, projects, delivery, and supplier management
  • Expertise and mastery over complexity management & innovation partnerships where many / most projects tend to.

Frequently or daily, the incumbent will engage, partner &/or interact with suppliers, internal technical and functional partners, project managers, and finance. Through this role, the incumbent will build and enhance broad & deep skills in Category & Supplier Management, Complexity Reduction, and sourcing; and build deep expertise in Chemicals (and commodities), direct materials and strategic procurement within the end-2-end supply chain.

Responsibilities

Following on from strategies; develop, generate & own pipeline / road map of initiatives driving value including all related to complexity reduction (portfolio or supplier footprint). For Complexity Reduction, the role will partner with procurement, technical partners, and be supported by a designated PMO structure. For sub-categories more regionally dominant, support the Regional Procurement organizations with key insights, intelligence and appropriate capabilities.
  • As GSRM, Own, develop, enhance relationships with designated / allotted S1/S2 suppliers, including co-owning (alongside R&D / Partner Enabled Innovation / Development), Joint Strategic Plans / agreements (JSPs) with certain (as allotted) S1 suppliers.
