Senior Director – Global Services / ESP Strategy

The Senior Director – GS/ESP Strategy, will play a leading role in the formulation, external/internal insights generation, development, communications and execution of our global multi-year strategy. This leader and their team will lead projects or major work streams related to emerging strategic issues and functional area strategies as needed; and will undertake strategic reviews as requested by GS/ESP LT. They will also work with cross-functional leaders and their team to inform, align and integrate GS/ESP strategies broadly to ensure superior employee experience, functional excellence and efficiencies.


In addition to the cross-functional GS/ESP Strategy, this leader and team will also be responsible for New Business Development, Identifying and Assessing New Opportunities, GS/ESP Branding, and value marketing.


The GS / ESP Strategy Director and their respective team will focus on the following activities:

  • Creation, maintenance, execution management oversight of the cross-functional GS /ESP Strategic Plan/ roadmaps
  • Assessing and solutioning new business opportunities for GS and ESP
  • Creating, maintenance and management of the GS / ESP branding strategy in partnership with GS/ESP Change and Communications team and other stakeholders

The GS / ESP Strategy Director will lead the development, execution and overall management of the GS / ESP Strategy Plans in collaboration and partnership with GS Leaders and the ESPLT to ensure GS and ESP roadmaps are complimentary to functional strategy plans and avoid duplicative efforts and/or conflicts. In addition, the GS / ESP Strategy Director will provide direction and oversight to Solution Architects to ensure new business development opportunities are vetted, solutioned and staffed using the standard NBD methodology. Furthermore, the GS / ESP Strategy Director will provide management oversight to the GS/ESP Value Marketing leader focused on curating the branding strategy for Global Services tier in close collaboration with the GS/ESP Change/Communications leader. The GS / ESP Strategy Director will be responsible for managing the on-going development, maturity and operational excellence of the Strategy team and to ensure expected value impacts and outcomes are realized.

  • Leads and oversees the development and execution of the GS / ESP strategy plans and roadmaps in partnership with GS/ESP/Functional leadership teams. Specific areas of responsibility include:
  • Leading the creation, implementation and communication of the strategy to drive improved employee experience, functional excellence and efficiencies
  • Translating the strategy plan into actionable and quantitative actions and activities
  • Ensuring roadmaps and plans are and remain aligned to the GS and ESP strategic priorities
  • Driving decision-making that ensures roadmaps are endorsed and accountabilities assigned to those charged with executing
  • Monitoring the execution of the strategic plan and roadmaps
  • Collaborating with other GS leaders and ESPLT to ensure cross-functional efforts are well planned and coordinated
  • Leads and oversees the execution and management of new business development activities for the GS tier in partnership with GS and functional leadership teams as well as for ESP and their respective leadership teams. Specific areas of responsibility include:
  • Oversight and use of the NBD process used by Solution Architects to assess opportunity feasibility for the GS / ESP shared services operating model
  • Review and assist Solution Architects with any customer presentations and/or face-to-face interactions as necessary as well as submissions to the GS / ESP portfolio process
  • Lead all “go/no-go” reviews in the NBD process inclusive of solution design & funding requests
  • Review transition on NBD opportunity to TPMO for staffing and execution
  • Conduct periodic reviews of the NBD process and measure performance and effectiveness
  • Provides oversight to the GS / ESP Value Marketing lead. Specific areas of responsibility include:
  • Oversight to the creation, maintenance, curation and use of the GS / ESP Branding strategy and supporting artifacts
  • Provide guidance and assistance to the analysis and development required to formulate the GS / ESP Branding strategy and supporting artifacts
  • Helping establish connections to other teams, performance metrics and/or processes necessary to gather supporting data for value and/or benefits statements made to stakeholders, customers or prospects
  • Review recommendations from the Branding Analyst for any proposed improvements and/or changes to the branding strategy, campaigns, artifacts or channels based on customer feedback or impact analysis
  • Collaborate closely with the VP of Strategy & Transformation and senior J&J GS/ESP leaders to address organizational and people challenges across GS / ESP.
  • Establishes and maintains a service-oriented mindset and focus on operational excellence across all teams; provides vision and direction with a defined long-range plan for the GS / ESP Strategy organization
  • Leads the ongoing development and maturity of the GS / ESP Strategy team in partnership with J&J GS senior leadership teams. Develops strategic programs that align to J&J GS strategy and delivers value in the form of tangible outcomes to the organization.
  • Understand and shape leading and emerging practices for shared services based on industry trends and external market intelligence to proactively drive value and high performance for J&J.
  • Operate as member of the J&J GS Strategy & Transformation leadership team, representing the unique challenges and needs for the Strategy organization in serving internal and external customers
  • Manage the relationship with the J&J sectors, reporting performance, resolving issues and identifying opportunities for J&J Global Services to deliver additional value-added services
  • Embrace and lead a culture of inclusiveness and multi-cultural engagement through coaching and feedback to peers and the broader community in Global Services in alignment with the J&J’s Leadership imperatives
  • Develop a strong pipeline of global, diverse leaders within Global Services Strategy & Transformation and across Global Services. Enable a Credo-based & High-Performance Culture within team.
  • Provide leadership, direction, coaching, feedback, and, where appropriate, discipline to and through subordinate team members

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required. Preferably a BA/BS in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Engineering, IT, Supply Chain or comparable by experience. An MBA is preferred.  
  • A minimum of 12 years of relative business experience is required
  • A minimum of 12 years of progressive strategic leadership responsibilities is required
  • Prior people management experience is required
  • Prior experience in strategic planning processes and strategic execution is required
  • Prior experience in a consultative sales and new business development skills are preferred
  • Strong program/project management skills & competencies are required
  • Lean & Six Sigma or equivalent certifications is preferred
  • Prior experience operating in a matrix global framework is required
  • Global or multi-national business experience strongly preferred
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills are required
  • Ability to structure, manage, and coordinate complex cross-enterprise projects with multiple stakeholders is required
  • Ability to challenge established views and assumptions at all levels and facilitate/lead discussions & debates is required
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to influence and build credibility; team oriented, collaborative, diplomatic, and flexibility is required
  • Being comfortable with ambiguity and complexity is required
  • Exceptional influence leadership skills, in an indirect, matrix-based, and virtual environment
  • Thorough understanding of shared services leading practices and industry trends is required
  • Strong partnership with peers and other senior level partners (Vice Presidents and Sr. Directors) developing and implementing a shared services strategy
  • Strong capability in assessing, developing and hiring talent
  • Track record to drive business results – identifies and capitalizes on opportunities, identifies risks/issues, assesses implications, formulates recommendations, and drives sound decisions that deliver results
  • Passionate about building a “Best in Class” shared services organization that drives business success
  • Strong presentation skills; can speak across various forums and communicate to broad, diverse audience is required
  • This position may require 20% domestic and/or international travel.
