Wealth and Investment Management (WIM) businesses build enduring client relationships through sound, thoughtful and objective advice. Wells Fargo Investment Institute (WFII) is part of WIM and a registered investment adviser and wholly-owned subsidiary of Wells Fargo & Company, providing investment research guidance, strategy, manager research, portfolio solutions and thought leadership within the Wealth and Investment Management (WIM) division, with the goal of supplying world class advice to the company’s financial and wealth advisers. WFII provides investment advice to Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Wells Fargo Advisors and other Wells Fargo affiliates.

Global Manager Research (GMR) is part of WFII and charged with recommending and overseeing third party managers for Wells Fargo Advisors, The Private Bank, Institutional Retirement and Trust (IRT) and Abbot Downing. The Investment Manager Research Analyst will act as an individual contributor on the GMR Research Support Team and is responsible for initial and ongoing monitoring of both proprietary and third party alternative investment managers. This position partners with other WFII team members and Wells Fargo Investment Management focusing on hedge fund, private equity, real estate and other alternative investment managers, including liquid alternatives (i.e. 40 Act mutual funds). The role will provide internal support to GMR’s analysts who execute sound due diligence and risk management for selection and oversight of all third party investment products through the implementation of a disciplined due diligence process designed to improve the probability of a better investment outcome for clients of Wells Fargo.

Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Serving as the technical and project lead for GMR’s proprietary RiskOptics application and process
  • Assist with managing existing technical innovation projects like GMR’s machine writing and natural language processing initiatives
  • Assisting more senior analysts in the selection, evaluation, and on-going monitoring of external investment managers
  • Developing the knowledge and skills necessary for investment decision-making and understanding the manager selection/oversight process
  • Responsibilities may also include generating investment communication materials, reporting, data aggregation, analysis and issue resolution
  • Supporting field investment professionals by responding to their inquiries about the recommendations and/or selection methodology used on products under coverage
  • Willingness to take on additional projects and assignments as determined by the group

Preferred locations for this role are Charlotte, Denver, New York City, San Francisco or St. Louis.

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ year of investment experience
  • 1+ year of advanced asset analysis experience

Desired Qualifications

  • A BS/BA degree or higher in accounting, finance, or economics
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, achieve goals, and work under pressure in a dynamic and complex environment
  • Ability to work effectively, as well as independently, in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) skills
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or demonstrated progress toward the designation

Other Desired Qualifications
  • Strong technical ability and familiarity with basic code writing
  • Understanding of Performance Measurement of investment managers and MPT statistics
  • 1+ years of experience performing qualitative and quantitative analysis, including statistical and performance analytics on investments
  • Direct experience in money manager research covering equity, fixed income or alternative investment managers
  • Experience working with Morningstar Direct and FactSet
