Director External Affairs - New Jersey

Overall Purpose

This position identifies, analyzes and researches threats and opportunities to strategically and tactically advance the interests of AT&T in New Jersey primarily with municipal, county government and local authorities.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Plans and implements activities for achieving the company’s objectives as they relate to Small Cell, FirstNet, Smart Cities and other new initiatives in New Jersey

Works with external NJ stakeholders in forging relationships that allow AT&T to achieve its business objectives with county and local governments in the state

Plans and implements activities, including CSM, Foundation and ICW events, that give AT&T exposure and recognition for its support of non-profit organizations in the key communities in New Jersey

Works with Business Unit clients to forge relations to help promote sales opportunities with the New Jersey GEM team (Government, Education & Medical Sales) or the Mobility stores

Works with the retail sales team to foster relationships in New Jersey’s communities

Works with attorneys to help with NJ stakeholders on municipal planning board and zoning board approvals of cellular towers/small cells

Serves as additional support for regulatory and legislative analysis and advocacy for state and federal lobbying efforts

Works with other industries to build coalitions to support mutual goals on key issues in New Jersey

Pro-actively watches for policy changes in New Jersey which could have far reaching consequences for AT&T

Partners with Public Affairs on enhancing AT&T’s reputation in the state

At times, coordinates efforts with other EA representatives in the Northeast Region


Candidate must have the ability to articulate complex issues and share information with various stakeholders, neighborhood councils, groups, residents and customers. Monitor and attend local government meetings, provide public testimony.  Position requires extended hours, evening meetings and functions and weekends

Education and Background Requirements

Preferred Bachelors Degree

At least 5 to 7 years of experience in various branches of NJ government, government relations for major company or NJ lobbying firm

Experience serving in a position with municipal, county or state government

Industry knowledge

Proven track record of developing grassroots lobbying activities in NJ

Demonstrated ability to impact decision making within New Jersey agencies and local government bodies in the state

Liaison with mayors, Freeholders and other local officials in New Jersey

Understanding of External Affairs management and practices

Understanding of state and local governments and ordinances

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to build relationships and advance the company’s objectives

Able to multi-task, work with mixed-level management and multiple disciplines to promote teamwork and to forge cross-functional success

Strategic, analytical thinker with strong writing and communication skills who can synthesize complex issues into simple, understandable language

A team player with ability to adhere to a high standard of integrity when dealing with internal and external stakeholders, peers and clients

Able to meet challenging short and long-term objectives

Able to develop innovative programs and ideas
