Deputy Director Advocacy - Oncology

The primary responsibilities of this role, Deputy Director Advocacy - Oncology, are to: 


  • Create and implement collaborative efforts related to achieving therapeutic area objectives;
  • Develop and leverage high level relationships with external patient advocates and other stakeholders to achieve Bayer’s therapeutic area objectives;
  • Build cross-functional strategies and tactical processes with partners in Communications, Government Affairs & Policy, Clinical Development, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, HEOR, Commercial Brands and Marketing;
  • Provide effective leadership over the development of Bayer’s advocacy function as it relates to Bayer’s Oncology interests;
  • Facilitate and develop initiatives, in conjunction with other Bayer personnel, to advance objectives in support of key therapeutic areas.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A., B.S. or equivalent four-year degree;
  • 12 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, with a focus in Oncology (equivalent combination of professional education and years of experience can supersede this requirement);
  • Ability to lead and accomplish business objectives in a matrix organization;
  • Knowledgeable of current public policies or policy proposals, practices, trends, and developments affecting Bayer’s businesses;
  • Ability to develop complex strategies to support and complement Bayer’s therapeutic efforts;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with commercial operations functions and processes in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong networks with individuals and patient and provider groups who influence public policy and participate in industry coalitions;
  • Understanding and knowledge of national and state legislative and regulatory (including Medicare and Medicaid / CMS), and commercial payer initiatives affecting reimbursement of pharmaceutical and Biotechnology products;
  • Ability to handle multiple high-priority projects simultaneously, and demonstrated ability to provide analysis, recommendations, and updates on project status with little notice;
  • Existing relationships and experience with advocacy and professional organization groups focused on oncology.
  • Key leadership competencies include:
    • Patient / Customer Orientation;
    • Strong knowledge of Pharmaceutical industry;
    • Strong interpersonal, management, and communication skills;
    • Excellent writing and presentation skills;
    • Experience with working in a team environment with divergent priorities;
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically;


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master Degree in Public Health, Public Policy, other health-related field or equivalent graduate degree.
