Wholesale Banking provides financial solutions to businesses across the United States and globally. Our nine major business lines include Business Banking, Middle Market Banking, Government and Institutional Banking, Corporate Banking, Commercial Real Estate, Financial Institutions Group, Wells Fargo Commercial Capital, Wells Fargo Securities, and the Investment Portfolio. We also have groups in credit risk, group risk, finance, marketing, human relations, and the Wholesale Chief Operating Office that support our businesses.

Wholesale and International Strategy (WIS)  is part of the Wholesale Strategy and Cross-Border Governance and is the strategy team for (a) Wholesale Banking and (b) international business for the enterprise.  One of the two primary responsibilities of WIS is to drive the annual strategic planning process for Wholesale Banking and Wells Fargo’s international business.  As part of the process, WIS facilitates discussions among senior leaders to promote alignment and collaboration across LOBs and support groups.  The other responsibility of WIS is to address strategic questions and lead a variety of high-impact initiatives. The types of initiatives include business portfolio reviews, business strategy formulation, priority alignment across LOBs, business case development for strategic investment, and enhancement of control and governance.    

The Wholesale and International Strategy Lead is responsible for supporting the strategic planning process and leading medium-size strategic initiatives while guiding Strategy Consultants within WIS and subject matter experts from partner groups.  A successful candidate must be a strategic thinker with strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. The candidate must have a robust understanding of Wholesale Banking businesses in the US as well as in international markets. The candidate needs to have outstanding leadership and organizational/interpersonal skills as he/she guides professionals within WIS and collaborates with partners from LOBs and support groups.  

Primary responsibilities:

  • Lead/manage medium-size cross-organizational strategic initiatives for Wholesale Banking and international business across the company
  • Manage the strategic planning process for Wholesale Banking and Wells Fargo’s international business    
  • Develop project plans, frame and conduct insightful analyses, identify solutions, and develop business cases and implementation plans
  • Facilitate decision-making and issue resolution as required with a broad array of leaders from across the organization
  • Obtain buy-in to proposed solutions/plans from stakeholders and support implementation as necessary
  • Identify and frame improvement opportunities in Wholesale Banking and Wells Fargo’s international activities
  • Guide the monitoring of industry and global trends to assess possible implications and impact on Wells Fargo strategy
  • Manage, guide and develop junior team members to help them deliver strategic plans and initiatives
  • Support governance for Wells Fargo’s overall non-US jurisdictions and provide subject matter expertise on cross-border concerns
  • Perform all of the above in close partnership with various lines of business and support functions and with an enterprise mindset to ensure alignment, consistency, and maximization of shareholder value

They are accountable for execution of all applicable risk programs (Credit, Market, Financial Crimes, Operational, Regulatory Compliance), which includes effectively following and adhering to applicable Wells Fargo policies and procedures, appropriately fulfilling risk and compliance obligations, timely and effective escalation and remediation of issues, and making sound risk decisions. There is emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite and all risk and compliance program requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following: management consulting, strategy consulting or financial services
  • 3+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following: project management, strategic assessment or international experience

  • Successful track record of managing cross-organizational/cross-regional initiatives and delivering tangible results
  • Demonstrated experience in developing business strategy, establishing new financial services legal entities and branches, and identifying/solving risk management, operational, technology and support/infrastructure issues
  • Experience in and/or exposure to international business, operational and regulatory environment
  • Strong influencing skills/effective communication skills with senior executives
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
