We are seeking an experienced attorney to provide legal support to our Abbot Downing and Investment & Fiduciary Services lines of business in the areas of personal trust administration, fiduciary investments, probate and general fiduciary law. This role provides substantive legal advice on matters for senior management of the Corporation and its principal subsidiaries to assist them in planning and policy setting. The attorney will represents the Corporation and its subsidiaries in negotiations and settlements of domestic or foreign legal issues of importance. The position will review the impact of all major changes in the law and assesses the impact on the Corporation's policies and operating procedures. May take an active role in the education and training of less experienced counsel or paralegals. Will also identify and oversee the handling and monitoring of systemic issues that pose legal, regulatory and reputational risk to the bank. 

Additional responsibilities:

  • Handle and assist in the resolution of client complaints
  • Identify and escalate risks posed to Wells Fargo, including legal, regulatory and reputational
  • Advise on regulatory compliance issues and participate in regulatory inquiries, exams and audit matters
  • Review and advise on policies and procedures related to areas of subject matter expertise
  • Monitor litigation trends, legal developments and legislative changes impacting the personal trust area
  • Collaborate and partner with colleagues to provide expert, risk-focused, and timely support to clients
  • Following, and leading consistent application of and compliance with, Legal Department and company policies and procedures, including Wells Fargo’s Vision, Values & Goals and policies and procedures with respect to providing legal advice and managing outside counsel and legal expense

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney; or 6+ years of experience as a practicing attorney and 2+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following areas: risk, compliance, contracts, government/regulatory, financial services, or technology
  • Active State Bar membership

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of research, counsel, and guidance on complex legal questions or inquiries
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective organizational, multi tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to analyze legal issues in substantive law in area of practice and provide effective advice to clients on complex legal matters
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines

Other Desired Qualifications
  • Possess significant subject matter expertise in the trust, estates and fiduciary areas of the law with emphasis on issues involving claims of breach of trust in trust administration and or fiduciary investment responsibilities and a working knowledge of various uniform laws that inform trust and estates state legislation
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex pre-litigation account matters and provide subject matter expertise and support for significant matters in litigation
