CIP Credit Analyst

Wholesale Banking provides financial solutions to businesses across the United States and globally.  Our nine major business lines include Business Banking, Middle Market Banking, Government and Institutional Banking, Corporate Banking, Commercial Real Estate, Financial Institutions Group, Wells Fargo Commercial Capital, Wells Fargo Securities, and the Investment Portfolio. We also have groups in credit risk, group risk, finance, marketing, human relations, and the Wholesale Chief Operating Office that support our businesses.

The Wells Fargo Credit Investment Portfolio’s Municipal team manages a portfolio of public bonds, private placements, and interest rate swaps.  The investment strategy is based on comprehensive credit analysis and the group leverages Wells Fargo’s credit culture and expertise to identify attractive investment opportunities for the Company.

  • Evaluate potential new investments in the primary and secondary credit markets and recommend opportunities with favorable risk/return. Perform robust credit and relative value analyses.
  • Coordinate with Portfolio Managers, Team Leads, peers, and junior analysts in the rating, evaluation, analysis, modeling, and negotiation of new and existing investments
  • Research the creditworthiness of individual municipal issuers and industry themes to identify, document, and report on operating issues and credit risks, quantifying potential implications
  • Design and maintain financial models for each investment, updating for actual financial results and forecasts as needed
  • Take measures to mitigate credit and market risks as necessary
  • Partner internally with, but not limited to, credit, market risk, technology, operations, controllers, and various auditors, to design and implement processes, systems, and controls, enabling continued strong performance of the portfolio over time
  • On a periodic basis provide analytical support for the valuation of bonds, to support OTTI analysis and valuation efforts
  • Prepare and review annual or quarterly reports as appropriate for the portfolio and for each investment
  • Train, develop and mentor junior analysts

They are accountable for execution of all applicable risk programs (Credit, Market, Financial Crimes, Operational, Regulatory Compliance), which includes effectively following, and adhering to and if applicable Wells Fargo policies and procedures, appropriately fulfilling risk and compliance obligations, timely and effective escalation and remediation of issues, and making sound risk decisions. There is emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite and all risk and compliance program requirements.


Required Qualifications

  • 1+ year of investment research experience

  • Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline driven environment
  • Effective organizational, multi tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience with Bloomberg
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong presentation skills

Other Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with: Fixed income and municipal assets, financial modeling, credit analysis
  • Bachelor’s degree with academic distinction, preferably with an emphasis/concentration in finance, accounting, mathematics, economics, engineering or related field
  • Strong interest in financial markets with expertise in macroeconomics, business cycle analysis, fixed income or commodity markets attained through coursework, individual study and prior work experience
  • Energetic self-starter who is flexible, organized, conscientious, proactive, and detail-oriented
  • An individual who demonstrates a sense of personal accountability and urgency for achieving results
  • MBA, CFA, or CPA designation
