Agronomy Technician

The primary responsibilities of this role, Agronomy Technician, are to:

 

  • Monitor, calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot technical equipment including: water and gas powered injectors and the two wheel tractor with implements;
  • Design, install, program, maintenance and repair of irrigation;
  • Maintain the health and integrity of field trials by monitoring, troubleshooting complex biotic and abiotic factors, and adjusting plant care;
  • Interact with researchers about agronomic requirements for specific crops based on their changing needs including:  Fertilizer, irrigation, bed size, spacing, variety selection, pesticide options and other relevant common practices in order to facilitate their processes and decision making;
  • Execute field preparation (tilling, mowing, bed shaping);
  • Support researchers with the application of soil and foliar treatments and train on proper use of applicable equipment;
  • Record all treatments and crops for each microplot station area;
  • Prepare agronomic reports for each microplot trial;
  • Plan, execute and communicate all pesticide applications for the IPM program for greenhouse and microplot;
  • Order and release beneficial insects when appropriate;
  • Ensure researchers are trained on registered products and wearing the proper PPE;
  • Monitor and record pest, weed and disease populations;
  • Send monthly pesticide use report to county;
  • Contribute to the daily operations of the Biologics greenhouses:

    Propagation, irrigation, fertilization and monitoring plant health and the different growing environments;

  • Participate in utilization of potting machine;
  • Use company truck to transport plant material and supplies between lab and greenhouse locations;
  • Drive Skid Steer front load;
  • Follow all safety and compliance policies;
  • Identify and communicate safety gaps, potential operational improvements and any updates related to safety;
  • Contribute to a clean, organized and safe workplace;
  • Advise, monitor, inform, and cooperate with GH and microplot researchers regarding the execution of experiments and activities within the operational area of expertise;
  • Provide excellent customer service, ensuring all work is done with quality and exactness to provide the necessary support in the most efficient way to the different research projects;
  • Take initiative to keep current about all technological developments related to agriculture and crop production;
  • Seek opportunities to network and collaborate with other colleagues to develop best practices.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture/Crop Production or a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience in an Agricultural field of work, or, non-degreed with at least 10 years of experience maintaining field grown crops;
  • Must be capable and competent of operating various types of field equipment;
  • Knowledge about IPM programs and pest identification with experience formulating and applying pesticides;
  • A basic understanding of experimental design and protocols;
  • Must be open to and seek out continual improvement and quickly adapt to changes;
  • Must possess the ability to define priorities and make decisions under time pressure;
  • Effective communication and presentation skills (verbal and written);
  • Customer focus and service oriented with the ability to establish good rapport with multidisciplinary project teams and be able to provide honest and timely feedback;
  • Strong organizational, observational and problem solving skills;
  • Proficient with MS Office with ability to generate data graphs;
  • Ability to obtain and keep current California Qualified Applicators Certificate;
  • Must have valid driver's license;
  • Ability to work in the following conditions: outdoor fields with wildlife and adverse weather conditions; cold, wet, hot as well as working within greenhouse environments;
  • Sit and/or stand for long periods of time and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.;
  • Ability to work some weekends and holidays.
