Agronomic Research Specialist

Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated Agronomic Research Specialist to work as part of a Nursery Seed Production Team in Galena, MD. The Agronomic Research Specialist will assist in overseeing daily operations associated with a comprehensive breeding program aimed at developing and identifying high yielding varieties. The individual will have the opportunity to assist in all phases of a breeding program including seed packaging, planting, pollination, plot maintenance, data collection, and harvest of breeding nursery. Additional responsibilities include supervision and training of temporary employees, active participation in station safety and QMS programs, and interacting on a professional level with personnel at other breeding stations. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the coordination and support of day-to-day nursery seed production activities, including seed packaging, planting, pollinating, data collection, plot maintenance, harvesting and threshing.
  • Utilization of research equipment such as planters, combines, research seed processing equipment, and hand-held electronic devices.
  • Provide support for precision agronomic strategies including GPS, GIS, soil sampling, and new equipment technology and its application into a breeding seed production program
  • Assist in computer-related activities
  • Ship and receive domestic and international nursery and seed testing materials
  • Perform safety inspections, and assist in providing safety training and guidance to field personnel.
  • Recruit, supervise and train temporary employees
  • Participate with the team to successfully maintain the Quality Management Standards
  • Assist in other projects and perform other duties as and when required
  • Overnight travel through out the year is possible. Occasional 2-3 day periods of travel for training and other meetings are likely during the year.


Required Education and Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Plant Breeding, or related field
  • Relevant experience in industry or academic research
  • Ability to execute protocols
  • Ability to work extended hours and/or travel during the peak planting, pollinating and harvest seasons
  • Experience utilizing MS Office Suite
  • Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs

Desired Education and Skills/Experience:

  • Familiarity with breeding methodologies
  • Training and experience in experimental design, seed production management, statistics and data interpretation
  • Broad knowledge of crop production and farming practices
  • Broad knowledge of farm equipment operation and repair
  • Demonstrated experience taking initiative and delivering results
  • Team leadership and supervisory experience
  • Pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain pesticide applicator license
