Advanced Analytics Engineering Consultant

The primary responsibilities of this role, Engineering Consultant, are to: 


  • Work with partners in Manufacturing, Manufacturing Sciences, Quality and Process Development to (a) improve process monitoring and reduce reaction time to potential undesired events, (b) perform root-cause analyses involving complex and large data sets, (c) apply advanced data analysis and simulation techniques to improve process understanding and recommend process improvements;
  • Develop and define the scope of complex data analysis or simulation projects;
  • Collect and extract data from manufacturing IT systems and perform the necessary work to prepare the data for analysis. This may involve establishing the context of the data an addressing missing data. The incumbent may develop scripts or other tools to perform pre-processing of very large data sets;
  • Perform advanced statistical analyses (inferential, descriptive, experimental design and multivariate data analysis) and provide technical assessments based on data analysis and process knowledge;
  • Develop tools and applications for enhanced process monitoring;
  • Develop mathematical models to simulate bio-manufacturing processes or cellular functions and behavior;
  • Work jointly with Engineering & Technology (E&T) and divisional partners to propose operational or engineering solutions to issues identified through mathematical analysis;
  • Document findings in technical reports and/or presentations;
  • Communicate as necessary to realize value for the company and help partners to understand and interpret results and recommendations;
  • Identify, develop and implement new process data analysis technologies together with internal partners;
  • Cultivate internal and external networks. The incumbent may facilitate global working groups addressing topics related to advanced data analysis, process monitoring and control, or simulation;
  • Lead cross-functional teams investigating manufacturing deviations or implementing process improvements;
  • Assist in the training of junior engineers.

Required Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. in Engineering or Science with at least four years’ of Data Analytics experience OR M.S. in Engineering or Science with at least six years of Data Analytics experience OR Engineering or Science with at least eight years of Data Analytics experience;
  • Able to independently develop and implement complex technical solutions and possesses strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Has a strong background in data-mining, statistical process control, inferential and descriptive statistics, multivariate data analysis, advanced statistical process modeling, mathematical modeling and numerical analysis, design of experiments, computer programming, process control, and manufacturing and data systems;
  • Demonstrates the ability to think creatively and takes initiative;
  • Able to learn new technical topics and develop new technical skills quickly;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Able to clearly and effectively communicate complex concepts;
  • Has experience in leading interdisciplinary teams and in project management of development and implementation projects;
  • Has a strong background in descriptive and inferential statistics and multivariate data analysis (MVDA);
  • Experience applying quantitative analyses (for example mathematical modeling, statistics and/or numerical analysis) for the improvement of commercial processes.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • A background in chemometrics;
  • Knowledge of the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Quality by Design (QBD) initiatives;
  • Experience in biological process development or manufacturing sciences environment with the use of design of experiments (DoE) and statistical data analysis.
