Specialist Innovation Quality

Location: Hershey, PA



This position will report to the Senior Manager QRC Innovation and Design, within the Quality Systems and Governance COE.  This position will work closely with R&D, Marketing, Engineering and other QRC and Plant personnel.   

This position is responsible for QRC involvement and application of Food Safety / Food Quality expertise in Innovation Stage gate process and for new Engineering projects. The position supports consistent application of QDR and Sanitary Design principles in innovation and project process on a global basis.   The position provides expertise, education and training relative to Food Safety / Food Quality application for Innovation & Engineering processes and provides a forward looking approach to proactive & preventive technologies to improve application in these processes globally.

The incumbent is considered to be a “generalist” with broad based knowledge in multiple areas including knowledge of local regulations, industry practices, and corporate policies related to these areas.  Would have a full understanding of corporate wide quality systems, with ability to implement as required. 

Travel up to 25% may be required based on specific project needs.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

Innovation and Project Support:  Support Implementation and Execution of QRC Food Safety / Food Quality Expertise to Innovation and Engineering Capital Projects and Process

  • Enhance QA Risk Assessment on Integrated Engineering Meetings
  • Building a strong partnership with stakeholders (Supply Chain, R&D, Quality, Engineering).
  • Ensure QRC project support on early Innovation and letter gate projects.
  • Implement Process for early involvement in Innovation.
  • Provide recommendations, education & guidance on Product Protection to Engineering & QA Plant Managers (i.e. Metal detection, Magnets, backflow prevention systems) and Sanitary Design.

Program and Process Leadership:  Functions as QRC (Quality Systems and Governance – Innovation) representative on routine and non-routine activities associated with program and process development and leadership.  This may include development of information management systems, quality design support, new product start-ups, Mergers and Acquisitions, and new facility operations.   

  • Improve Technical Knowledge and skills of QRC / QA Personnel on QDR Process and Food Safety engineering assessments.
  • Ensure proper Policy and Procedure development updates to reflect Food Safety / Food Quality agenda at Stage gate process and Engineering assessments.
  • Capture project / start up “lessons learned”.  Enable means to share learnings, incorporate appropriate checks for future projects
  • Develop Clear understanding of Roles and Responsibilities for the QRC Function involvement in the Stage Gate process and communicate appropriately.
  • Promotes project management resources (guidance, tools, templates, best practices).
  • Provides R&D and Engineering understanding on what is the Food Safety Role these departments play and the way they influence in Food Safety.


Continuous Improvement

Participate in process/procedure improvement sessions related to COE (Center of Excellence) level innovation and engineering project support. 

  • Identify and adapt forward looking technologies / initiative for Food Safety and innovation and design assessment
  • Benchmark with external companies on Industry Best Demonstrated Practices
  • Be mindful of emerging FS / FQ technology surveillance & preventive measures


Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities: 

  • Superior communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing operations.
  • Project management Skills, Engineering, Food Safety, Innovation stage gate, and Quality background.
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. FDA regulations, Hershey’s PEP, quality design principles, HACCP and GMP’s.  Additional regional knowledge of pertinent GMP and/or HACCP regulations outside of the U.S. will be considered a plus.
  • Ability to lead & influence change
  • Team player able to bring diverse people and opinions together to provide optimal solutions
  • Ability to troubleshoot and evaluate quality systems.
  • Capable of understanding varied manufacturing processes to include dairy, sweeteners, confectionery - chocolate and non-chocolate, cereal, tree nuts, ground nuts, raisins, flour, baking and warehousing.
  • Self-motivated and self-starting.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a passport.
  • Ability to organize, schedule and conduct travel.
  • Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time with possible weekend travel and stays required.
  • Must have strong computer skills and be proficient in desktop software packages MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.  Knowledge of SAP considered a plus.


Education:           BS in Food Science or equivalent

Experience:         Minimum of 2 years as a QA Specialist and 2 years food industry quality assurance experience or equivalent.
