Senior Mechanical Engineer - Innovation Engineering

Monsanto is seeking a highly innovative and skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Global Production Technology: Innovation and Engineering division of our Global Supply Chain organization located at our headquarters in St. Louis, MO (Creve Coeur). This position represents an opportunity in an exciting, dynamic environment serving a broad range of research and development needs within the agriculture industry. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of developing automated machines and systems for laboratory, production/manufacturing, and agricultural environments. This position will work on multi-disciplinary engineering teams and have a significant hands-on role in the design, development, assembly and documentation of these systems from the prototyping/validation stage through field deployment. Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and development of automated machines and systems for domestic and international laboratory, production, and agricultural field environments working closely with other engineering and science disciplines throughout the project lifecycle on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Researches existing methods and proposes new approaches that add value to the products in manufacturing and supply chain
  • Develop and implement test protocols to validate key system performance metrics
  • Participate in project proposal development estimating resources, timeline and cost as well as developing documentation for functional requirements, assembly components, drawing packages, change control, bill of materials, and preventative maintenance schedule, where applicable
  • Identify and form partnerships with internal and external fabrication and vendors

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and 10+ years professional work experience OR a Master’s degree and 5+ years professional work experience
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent
  • Familiarity with automated instrumentation/equipment for production environments, with specific experience in automation (agriculture industry experience preferred)
  • Significant experience with prototyping methods and test fixtures
  • Strong experience with rapid prototyping techniques is required, including understanding of tradeoffs and limitations for practicality and manufacturability
  • Experience with stepper/servo motor-based design schemes and pneumatic systems
  • Experience with validation methods/tools including experimental design, data reduction/analysis, interpretation, and iteration
  • A strong track record of interdisciplinary interaction with varied engineering and science fields, with proven teamwork skills
  • Strong communication skills to all levels of internal and external leadership and scientists/engineers with diverse backgrounds
  • A proven track record of developing productive and sustainable relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • A proven record of delivering results on aggressive timetables, innovative thinking, and mentoring/teamwork skills
  • Up to 15% Travel
Desired Skills/Experience:
  • Experience with imaging systems, image processing, or similar analytics methods/analysis
  • Experience with hydraulic systems
  • Experience with engineering belt-driven material transport
