Principal Clinical Data Warehouse Programmer

The primary responsibilities of this role, Principal Clinical Data Warehouse Programmer, are to:


  • Understand protocol and compound requirements and has responsibility to translate them to technical specifications;
  • Document and maintain study level specifications for data transformations ensuring a high level of consistency and quality within and across studies;
  • Develop and maintain study level programs to create operational study level data structures for downstream end to end use by multiple consumers ensuring alignment across studies within the same compound;
  • Create and maintain consumer areas and/or data marts for the provision and use of data;
  • Ensure that standard development and testing techniques are used and that all solutions are of the highest quality and conform to all SOPs, OIs and Best Practice Documents;
  • Facilitate requirements gathering from consumers and develop solutions to meeting immediate and long-term needs of business customers;   
  • Perform compliance of study structure against standard library definitions;
  • Collaborate with study team functional representatives to ensure a sound understanding of the technical platforms for standardized solutions to study related requests or issues;
  • Monitor system performance and integrity from user perspective, and report any deficiencies to technical colleagues.  Work with technical colleagues on identification and implementation of corrective and preventative actions, as required;    
  • Estimate the time and resources needed to complete assignments. Track work progress and provide status reports to line manager and study team representatives;
  • Complete documentation associated with programming tasks in compliance with applicable SOPs, OIs and Best Practice Documents;
  • Participate and actively contribute to process definition and documentation of Best Practices and/or step by step guides;
  • Closely collaborate and communicate within the group and across the organization;
  • Participate and actively contribute to cross functional process optimization initiatives;
  • Participate in Knowledge Sharing forums within the group and across the organization;
  • Assist with the training of new programmer(s) or temporary staff;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters in a natural science, Statistics, Computer Science or a related field with 5+ years of experience in a technical environment, focusing on data warehousing and/or extract, transform, load (ETL) activities;
  • Bachelors in a natural science, Statistics, Computer Science or a related field with 8+ years of experience in a technical environment, focusing on data warehousing and/or ETL activities;
  • Experience considered higher weight over educational background;
  • Advanced knowledge of data warehousing principles, technologies and related ETL processes;
  • Previous experience in Oracle Life Sciences Data Hub (LSH) preferred, including advanced knowledge of core functionality of LSH, and familiarity with LSH best practices;
  • Experience using standard templates for data warehouse container structures, along with the ability to manage, create and update templates;
  • Experience in performing ETL tasks and validating results;
  • Experience in the set-up, maintenance and promotion of programs to and from standard libraries;
  • Experience with the tools and utilities for the management of pharmaceutical sponsor proprietary or industry clinical data standards  i.e. sponsor specific or CDISC) is required;
  • Experience with a variety of programming languages including but not limited to PL/SQL, JAVA, SAS, C #;
  • 5+ years hands on experience in programming in SQL and Oracle PL/SQL, using SQL developer, TOAD or similar program development applications for realization of automations and programming activities in a regulated environment;
  • Ability to translate business questions into SQL queries to answer those questions appropriately;
  • Writing PL/SQL programs for accomplishing more complex queries or data modifications;
  • Knowledge of clinical data mapping, transformation and end to end processes;
  • Experience working with clinical data in a relational database;
  • Ability to work in and lead team initiatives, including priority setting and timeline development;
  • Experience in comprehensive software testing, inspections, analyses, and other verification tasks performed at each stage of the software development life cycle is required;
  • Knowledge of CDISC standards for CDASH, SDTM and ADaM;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
