SUMMARY OF JOB
Research and take accurate, timely, fair and unbiased news, news feature, business, sports and feature photographs and/or videos on a daily, deadline basis for the newspaper, its website and publishing partners such as CoxNet. Generate compelling, practical photo and/or video ideas that lead to publication. Develop and maintain sources that provide current and highly reliable information for visual publication. Work cooperatively with reporters and graphic artists to produce comprehensive coverage. Work scheduled shifts that may include days, nights, weekends and holidays. 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS AND CRITERIA
Generate thoughtful, timely and practical photo ideas that break news, illustrate trends, give context and insight to news events or issues, profile people and help readers cope with their day-to-day lives. Develop these ideas into visual coverage that is accurate, compelling, and delivered for publication by an agreed upon deadline. In addition, take assignments follow them through to publication in the same manner described above. Published work must be competitive with all other print and electronic information sources in Central Texas, including other newspapers, television and radio stations and Internet sources. Whether measuring through individual photographs or as a body of work, the photographer’s published product should be of value to readers, improve the quality of the newspaper and meet the company’s goal of being the premiere source of news and information in the region.

Qualifications

Education/Experience  Some college and some daily journalism experience. This may include experience gained through school publications and internships
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  Should understand the fundamentals and ethics of journalism. Must have a demonstrated ability to shoot news, news feature, and sports or feature photos. Should have a keen sense of vision and the ability to see and capture the commonplace in fresh ways. Should have a basic understanding of the technical aspects of photography, including color, field and studio lighting, electronic scanning, manipulation and transmission. Should keep abreast of technical changes in photography and, as needed, in newspaper printing (reproduction). Should have the ability to establish relationships and get along with sources, peers and supervisors. Should be curious, open to varying points of view, observant, persistent, quick, accurate and balanced. Should be well read and have a social conscience. Must be able to converse and write clearly in English. Must be able to gather and synthesize information to take accurate, timely, interesting and diverse photographs on a daily, deadline basis. Must possess good writing, spelling, organizational and communication skills. Must be able to gather information using a wide range of techniques including face-to-face interviews, telephone conversations, e-mail messaging, the Internet research and standard hard-copy records searches. Must have the ability to establish relationships and get along with sources, peers and supervisors. Must be reliable and trustworthy. Knowledge of Texas, Central Texas and Austin is an advantage. 
The photographer will be given work schedules in advance. However, news assignments could require weekday hours, night hours, and weekend and holiday shifts. The photographer must be able to quickly get to various locations in Central Texas during the day and at night and must be available to travel, if required. Must have transportation and a valid driver's license.

Education/Experience  College journalism degree and 6 or more years daily newspaper experience is preferred.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:The photographer must be able to use a notepad, a Macintosh computer, a telephone, voicemail, a cell phone, pager, a tape recorder, copying machine, camera and lighting equipment, scanners, laptop computers and a standard calculator. The photographer must also be able to effectively use the communications and pagination software systems that the newspaper relies on. These include Windows, Microsoft Office products, Netscape Communicator products and DT pagination software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Lifts up to 40 lbs of equipment from ground into and out of automobile. Carries up to 25 lbs. of equipment in camera bag. Occasional exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals. Continual walking, getting in and out of cars, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting of camera equipment. Occasional climbing and negotiating uneven and slippery terrain on foot. Continual daily exposure to extreme seasonal climate of area. Vision: Near vision: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less Mid-range vision: Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet
