Manufacturing Engineer – Engine/Transmission Assembly – PPO - GPS0003286

Description: Responsible for engine and/or transmission assembly manufacturing engineering execution of pre-production programs through alpha, beta and gamma build phases.  Works collaboratively with Product Engineering, Central Manufacturing Engineering and others to address build issues and ensure BOP/BOE requirements are met for Pre-Production Operations.  Exercises technical direction over support personnel, including OEM’s, tool design/build suppliers and installation trades. Maintains daily contact with engineering functions as programs are developed finalized and put into production. Responsibilities:
  • Provides technical direction to and oversight of outside tool vendors in the design and build of assembly tooling and fixtures
  • Works with engine and/or transmission test equipment suppliers in the programming and preparation of test equipment for new programs (leak test, cold test, hot test, torque-to-turn, multi-spindle fastening systems, RTV application equipment, etc.)
  • Work may involve development and testing of advanced manufacturing process technology
  • Implements engineering changes as driven by product requirements
  • Defines system requirements for engine build and test equipment
  • Works with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and to support build programs
  • Communicates information to and from internal and external customer organizations
  • Coordinates and consults with outside departments including product engineering and manufacturing engineering
  • Stays abreast of new manufacturing technology, competitive products, and latest techniques
  • Develops and refines PFMEAs and Control Plans to support defect prevention in PPO
  • Manages procurement, design, run-off, installation, and release of capital equipment in support of pre-production engine and/or transmission assembly operations.  Responsible for project timing and milestones.
  • Works closely with multi-disciplined teams to understand functional requirements, contributes to generation of innovative ideas, develops project plans and implements appropriate solutions
  • Supports and interacts with manufacturing operations personnel.
  • Coaches and supports operations teams in the use of GMS tools to achieve productivity, quality and safety targets.
  • Assists in establishing operational methods and work standards using various measurement techniques.  Analyzes existing operations and proposes process improvements.
  • Optimizes use of floor space, materials, and equipment.
Required Qualifications:
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics, Materials Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years engineering experience in related area
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results
  • Effectively deals with ambiguity and copes with change
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, particularly engine and/or transmission assembly and test experience
  • Knowledge of GM-Global Manufacturing System and Lean Manufacturing principles
  • Knowledge of work measurement and work standards
  • Knowledge of computer software as it pertains to engineering (Microsoft Office, AutoCad, TeamCenter, etc.)
