WHO ARE WE?

The Technology Acquisition & Partnerships (TAP) team is seeking a Director to support HBO’s Technology organization in connection with vendor assessment, selection, negotiation and relationship management.
 
We are looking for a Director who will be responsible for overseeing technology acquisition from HBO’s mid-tier and top-tier technology partnerships, with a primary focus on complex deal negotiation, development and enforcement of sourcing policies, and management of HBO’s key technology vendor relationships.  

OVERALL SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President of Technology Acquisition & Partnerships, this position entails sourcing and managing technology-related products and services for HBO’s entire Technology organization.  The position will center mainly around technology contract negotiation and deal management (e.g., requirements gathering, coordination among internal departments, development of deal strategy and structure, and reporting), but also entails strategic support in vendor selection as well as vendor relationship management.

This individual will possess technology expertise, high business acumen and strong negotiating skills. Working side by side with his/her counterparts in HBO’s Legal Department, this individual will represent, craft and garner the best business terms for HBO and in many instances, for all Time Warner affiliates.  Responsibilities span the entire contract lifecycle:  from project inception, complex contract negotiation, risk identification and mitigation, pricing negotiations, through contract execution, project launch, and ongoing vendor compliance.  He/She will ensure alignment among the agreements negotiated and in place, operational policies and practices, and overall enterprise-wide business objectives.

For HBO’s most important vendors, this individual will provide a deep level of relationship management. This will include being well-versed on all aspects of HBO and Time Warner’s relationships with these vendors; briefing senior management on a regular basis on the health and status of our relationship; performing business reviews; and/or handling escalations.

Strong background and experience in supporting a Chief information Security Officer (CISO) and Information Security organizations and Media Technology and Information Services organizations.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1) RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT 35%. The Director will act as an HBO business representative for mid-tier and top-tier HBO technology vendors, including: 

  • Managing HBO’s business relationships with these vendors, with a focus on business issues, escalations and other non-operational matters. 

  • Planning and managing vendor business reviews and scorecarding with key vendors. 

  • Coordinating HBO Technology’s involvement in industry events such as Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). 

  • Preparing and delivering briefing documents and other data/reports on key HBO technology relationships for senior management and Time Warner Corporate.


2) CONTRACT NEGOTIATION 35%. The Director will handle business and technical negotiations on mid-tier and top-tier technology transactions, including:

  • Gathering requirements and coordinate involvement from all project participants, including Legal, Finance and HBO Technology stakeholders. 

  • Working with Analytics, Planning and Operations (APO) to identify budgetary constraints, perform financial analyses, and develop desired set of commercial terms. 

  • Developing a deal structure and negotiation strategy to optimize business outcomes. 

  • Negotiating pricing and other commercial terms, as well as Statements of Work, Service Level Agreements and other technical/operational documents. 

  • Owning overall responsibility for delivering finalized agreements in accordance with applicable timing requirements and other relevant factors.


3) SOURCING & RELATIONSHIP STRATEGY 20%. The Director will participate in the development of TAP’s sourcing and relationship management strategies and policies, and will be required to interpret and enforce these policies in connection with TAP transactions.

  • Act as liaison with Legal, APO and other HBO support departments throughout contract negotiation and relationship management process. 

  • Maintain knowledge of sourcing, contract negotiation and relationship management best practices and industry trends.


4) PROCESSING & OPERATIONS 10%. The Director, along with the other TAP Directors, will provide oversight of the processing and operations functions of the TAP team, including:

  • Overseeing the request for proposal/quote/information (RFX) process and the competitive bid process for technology vendor selection, where applicable. 

  • Identifying and assessing technology vendors/products from a strategic perspective, to ensure that vendor/product selection is aligned with HBO Technology objectives. 

  • Assessing impact of technology purchases on other parts of the HBO organization, domestically and globally, as well as across the other Time Warner divisions. 

  • Interpreting and ensuring compliance with HBO sourcing and contract policies.   


REQUIREMENTS
 

  • 10+ years’ related experience in media and/or technology with a strong focus on sourcing, contract negotiation and technology vendor management. 

  • Direct experience negotiating technology contracts (e.g., software, hardware, SaaS, Cloud, infrastructure, transport, IT security services, consulting, etc.)

  • Keen analytic, organizational, and problem solving skills that enable sound decision making. 

  • Excellent communication, presentation and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Must thrive in a fast paced, time sensitive, cross functional environment and be able to prioritize tasks and projects accordingly

  • Ability to work well in ambiguously defined circumstances. 

  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours, as business needs dictate.

  • Must be a self-starter with strong executive presence. 

  • MBA and/or Law degree strongly preferred.
