We have a great opportunity for a Global Technical Manager.

The BASF global business unit, Fuel and Lubricant Solutions, develops, produces and markets a large number of performance chemicals for the worldwide automotive and oil industries. The business is influenced mainly by the trends toward global motorization and the further development of engines designed to cut fuel consumption.

Offerings cover fuel performance packages, refinery additives, polyisobutenes, engine coolants (Glysantin® brand) and brake fluids as well as lubricant additives, compounded lubricants, synthetic base stocks and components for metalworking fluids. The business unit has its main facilities in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Cincinnati and Florham Park in the USA, Nanjing and Shanghai in China, as well as Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Global Technical Manager (1701340)

The Global Technical Marketing Manager will lead a team of application technologists in North America to develop global products for our driveline and industrial portfolio of synthetic lubricants. You will also liaise with other technical colleagues located in Europe and Asia.

Formula for Success: You Will…

Strategic tasks:

Functional responsibility for global finished lubricant formulation development for Technical Marketing Managers (TMMs) in North America. Drive compounded lubricants product development effort in line with global SBU strategy. Drive, control and implement all key technical aspects of product development pipeline as per SBU strategy. To work towards a synergistic approach for product development maximizing the total benefits of BASF Lubricant Solutions business.

Key Responsibilities:

Contribute to the definition, prioritization and execution of R&D projects in the compounded lubricants portfolio together with global marketing. Responsible for all North American TMMs for their R&D project targets, prioritizations, progresses in line with global strategy. Provide support to Global/Regional Product Group Management with Product Launches, Production and Technical Support as necessary.

Support Global Lab Community: ISO, Safety, Personnel, Global Intelligent Lab etc.

Customer Focus:

Help identifying and unlocking new business potential with direct and indirect customers in collaboration with global marketing and regional sales account teams. Guide product development as per customer needs, market trends and competitive activities. Help the North America Technical Marketing Team to qualify products at key global OEMs/Customers to secure business.

Product launch:

Lead North America Technical Development and Support Product Launch Field Trials (Transportation/Industrial). Help with technical data and information in the development and implementation of market launch concepts for newly developed products including target segments, promotional data set, unique value proposition etc.

Planning:

Responsible for North America quarterly development updates/budgets in Phase Gate Innovation Management. Initiate and support broad based R&D Projects e.g. Vortex, Collibri, Eclipse, EEB with resource and budget planning. Develop, forecast & report budgets for external tests supporting developments.

Communication:

Communicate across functions including global marketing, product management, sales, TMMs and regulatory functions. Prepare and implement Transportation & Industrial segments related third party communication. Maintain contact and build strong technical network.

Global Organizational Interfaces:

Functionally reporting to Global Marketing. Administratively reporting to the Technical Director for Lab Operations, North America. Will maintain regular contacts with global development teams in Europe and Asia.


Required:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry required
  • 8 years of experience in global driveline lubricants development & relevant OEM/Customer approvals required
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, reporting, and communication skills.
  • 3 years of experience leading and guiding product development by managing projects and teams in a timely manner to its completion required
  • Demonstrated ability to develop products, which are commercially successful.
  • Proven track record in establishing networks with OEMs to understand their product development needs and secure subsequent approvals by developing the right product.
  • Proven leadership and teamwork qualities in a matrix organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively in an international and cross functional team environment
  • Strong computer skills including experience with Excel pivot tables and Power Point.
  • 20 % Travel

Desired:

  • 10+ years of leadership experience in commercially successful compounded lubricant product development with Global OEM/Customers in driveline area.
  • Experience in lubricant approval processes including test development/evaluation and Field testing
  • Experience in new lubricant product launches
  • Experience in developing products as per Global business strategies
  • Ability to use WRIS, GIIC
