Engineer, Gas Operations Engineering

Description About the Position: The Operations Engineering Department in Network Strategy is responsible for the short and long range planning for the development and reinforcement of National Grid U.S. Gas System from the interstate natural gas pipeline supply points to the customers service lateral. This includes support to the gas sales and operating departments regarding day-to-day, contingency and operation of the gas system. Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to: Performing engineering studies and computerized network analysis utilizing Synergi Gas network software to determine the capability of National Grid’s US gas infrastructure to produce and deliver gas to its customers under normal, contingency and peak conditions. Performing studies of proposed system expansion with consideration given to service reliability, safety, operation and maintenance costs and engineering economics. This includes the preparation of reports covering recommended and alternate plans to satisfy short and long term load growth. Monitoring, investigating and analyzing the operation of the gas system to meet customer loads. Provide operational assistance and recommendations to Gas System Operations, Instrumentation &Regulation, Field Operations, Construction and Gas Supply in analyzing peak and contingency conditions. Coordinate the installation and replacement of National Grid’s facilities in cooperation with project managers and construction supervisors responsible for dealing with public works construction. Analyze GCR’s to determine the ability of the gas system to add new or additional load. This includes reviewing and providing instructions for main/service sizing and main routing to supply larger commercial, industrial and power generation loads. Review System Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for temperature restrictions and jumper bypass sizing to ensure system reliability. This includes pre-analysis for capital projects during the design and planning stages. Qualifications Knowledge & Experience Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical or Electrical/Computer engineering required. Previous gas transmission and distribution planning experience utilizing SynerGEE gas network software is strongly preferred. Must have strong computer skills. Strong communication and written skills required. Proven ability to act in a leadership role and coordinate multiple disciplines through project sponsorship. Knowledge of Federal DOT and State Codes related to the Transmission & Distribution of natural gas as well as applicable industry codes is preferred.
