Director, Federal Taxes ensures that BASF meets its Federal income tax legal obligations in a timely and accurate manner while minimizing the Federal income tax liability within the limits of the law. The position manages several tax professional involving numerous work streams and uses a broad skillset to identify issues and planning opportunities while leveraging internal resources to preserve and enhance value. Director, Federal Taxes is involved with all facets of the income taxes and acts as a key partner with colleagues in the Finance and Accounting organizations in North America and Germany as well as the BASF Global and North American International and Research Tax Planning Groups. Director, Federal Taxes must be able to make independent decisions or make recommendations to Senior Management taking into consideration the benefits and risks of several options and understand how and when to engage the appropriate stakeholders.   • Manage staff of tax professionals responsible for all the federal income tax compliance aspects involved in planning, preparing, supporting and filing the annual US consolidated federal income tax return and various partnership returns and the accounting of income taxes for all US entities in the Group.
  • Be responsible for tax research, planning and special projects involving various topics including, but not limited to, R&D tax credit, tax aspects related to financing, LIFO inventory method, entity and asset valuations, income tax forecasts and estimated tax payments.
  • Strategic management and handling of IRS examinations including issue resolution.
  • Manage all US federal income tax aspects of acquisitions and divestitures including integration, income tax accounting, income tax returns and applicable income tax audits.
  • Manage staff responsible for ensuring that the BASF Global Transfer Pricing Guidelines are implemented and complied with in North America.
  • Weekly interaction with global colleagues in tax, controlling and finance ensuring North American alignment with global goals and objectives.
  • Have oversight responsibilities for income tax accounting for the BASF entities located in Mexico and Canada.
  • Ensure North American tax compliance with the implementation of the Base Erosion Profit Shifting initiatives including the Country-by-Country reporting and local country documentation
  • Own all tax compliance responsibilities for BASF in Puerto Rico including planning, preparing, supporting and filing various returns including income tax, excise tax and property tax returns and the accounting of income taxes.

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You…
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Either a Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or Taxation OR CPA is required.
  • Minimum 15 years of work experience in a public accounting firm and/or large corporate tax department required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience directly managing others preferred.
  • Significant big 4 accounting firm experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform tax research and deliver written memoranda in a timely fashion.
  • Proven mastery of accounting for income taxes and consolidated returns required.
  • Broad exposure to tax challenges facing large multinational manufacturing organizations, including, but not limited to, transfer pricing and reporting of foreign payments; foreign tax credit planning, methods of accounting for fixed assets, inventory, reserves, etc. and tax controversy work (exam and appeals level).
  • Prior experience with transactional work, including, but not limited to, purchase price accounting and allocations; ownership change studies under section 382; and transaction due diligence.
  • Excellent networking, communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills with the ability to foresee issues and develop recommended strategies.
