Deputy Director, Clinical Data Management

The primary responsibilities of this role, Deputy Director, Clinical Data Management, are to: 


  • Lead and manage a functional subgroup of 8 to 12 direct reports, potentially including Expert Data Manager (VS1.3), Principal Data Manager (VS 1.2) and Senior/Lead Data Manager (up to VS 1.1) allocated to one TA and located in 1-2 regions. Represent direct reports openly, consistently and by managing diverse staff in a multicultural, global environment of clinical development;
  • Account for the performance management, including annual performance planning, development dialogs, on-going progress review, feedback and performance evaluation based on input from Global Clinical Team and Study Team members, peers within Global Data Sciences & Analytics and other relevant interfacing functions;
  • Oversee planning, management and implementation of clinical development strategy according to the agreed Clinical Development Plan (CDP) within the established timelines, budget, and quality required for multiple global regulatory submissions;
  • Ensure projects/studies are resourced appropriately by allocating or hiring the appropriate staff to deliver project/study goals. In addition, critically analyze project/study needs as well as manage and measure the workload requirements of direct reports. These activities are done in close alignment with manager and peers;
  • Ensure all direct reports are adequately trained and develop the necessary skill set to manage the planning, implementation, tracking, and reporting of assigned clinical projects/studies;
  • Perform as a role model with appropriate behavior and develop, motivate, and achieve a strong performing team. Focus on role model qualities such as personal excellence, integrity, trust, ethical conduct, and achievement. This is accomplished by developing and maintaining an environment that encourages role model behaviors through strong communication, sound mentoring, and quality coaching of both strengths and areas of potential improvement;
  • Proactively support and implement process improvements for operational activities where necessary. To increase efficiencies within Global Clinical Development in close collaboration with other global functions, e.g. measuring against internal and external best practices in order to implement a continuously learning organization;
  • Manage internal cost of up to 1.5 Mio. €, including resource, travel and training requirements, if required. Proactively initiate corrective action and planning adjustments as needed;
  • Ensure all clinical activities and studies are conducted with the highest ethical standards. Ensure all internal and external regulations are followed e.g. CFR, ICH-GCP, SOPs, processes etc. by facilitating reasonable oversight for both internal and external activities. Accountable for awareness and adherence to all applicable compliance rules and regulations; adhere to company values.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education with 7+ years of relevant healthcare experience including 4 - 5 years of Clinical Development experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a CRO;
  • Leadership, motivational and interpersonal skills;
  • Good knowledge of clinical development, study management, site and data management, as well as biostatistical processes, ICH-GCP, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Ability to lead staff in developing and applying new techniques as well as strong interpersonal skills in the management and development of people in a global environment;
  • Administrative, project management, and technical skills;
  • Effective verbal and written English communication skills in relation to both internal and external colleagues.
  • Domestic relocation is offered for this position.
