Rutgers University New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) invites applicants for the position of the Peter W. Carmel, MD Endowed Chair of Neurological Surgery.  


We are seeking an individual with a record of accomplishments as a clinician, researcher, and educator with strong leadership qualities and significant management expertise to develop and lead the newly created Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) Department of Neurosurgery.  This newly formed clinical and academic entity consists of two, previously independent, Departments of Neurosurgery at NJMS and RWJMS along with an affiliation with the Neurosurgery program at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ). Together this program is highly recognized for a broad expertise in all Neurosurgical subspecialties, performing over 5000 procedures per year and maintaining a joint, fully accredited, neurosurgical residency training program that is very highly regarded.


The successful candidate should be a leader in the field of Neurological Surgery with a national and international reputation. Candidates must also have clinical and translational science expertise along with broad management experience. The candidate must commit commensurate time and effort to both campuses in order to navigate the multitude of complexities while integrating the various institutions under a single, highly productive, academic department.


With thirteen full-time faculty, current subspecialties for all the clinical sites include cerebrovascular and endovascular care, complex and minimally invasive spine care, stereotactic and functional, tumor and skull base surgery, radiosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and neurotrauma. In addition, there is close collaboration with the Departments of Neurology and Otolaryngology as well as the NCI-designated Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
