Decision Support Analyst


Within the Hospital Financial Services Department, the position of Decision Support Analyst is responsible for three major types of analysis, or other tasks as assigned. These major areas are described in more detail below:

Decision Support:
Use patient accounting, decision support, general ledger, payroll, and other financial systems to assist senior management in decision making. Major source is the EPSi Decision Support system, which combines data from the various source systems in one patient-level data base.
Prepare product line analysis, market analysis, return on investment analysis, break-even analysis, contribution margin by service type, patient outcomes, etc.
Assess revenue streams, which requires an understanding of managed care contracts, government sponsors, ICD-9, ICD-10 and CPT coding.
Model expenses, requiring the ability to work with hospital and clinical managers to build labor, supply, and other expense projections.
Understand source data in order to identify potential errors, diagnose problems, and work with technical staff to make corrections.

Financial Analysis:
Design and implement reports showing revenue, revenue deductions, FTE and expenses by categories to be used for financial projections.
Provide computer generated reports to respond to Administrative requests.

Patient Population and Process Improvement Analysis:
Create data downloads from EPSi data base to support Process Improvement projects for Hospital Operations and Clinical Departments.
Develop detailed drill down utilization reports to examine and understand practice patterns and help the clinical teams develop protocols and best practices.
Develop Surgical package rates and routinely report their financial performance.
Design and maintain summary reports that track and report the cost, quality and effectiveness of disease management programs.

Bachelors' degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or Mathematics required. MBA or MPH preferred.
3-5 years increasingly responsible experience in hospital or medical group financial analysis.
Expertise with Excel required and Access preferred.
Familiarity with hospital decision support systems, EPSi preferred.
Ability to interact professionally with various levels of hospital staff, managers, and physicians.
Demonstrated effectiveness working as part of a team.
Ability to translate clinical user needs into financial reporting structures and conversely explain financial results to non-financial / technical customers.
Understanding of healthcare coding schemes: ICD-9, ICD-10, UB-04, CPT4, etc.
Understanding of health plan and government reimbursement mechanisms to hospitals and physicians.
Ability to think creatively, anticipate and respond in a rapidly changing industry.
