U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company's role is to responsibly manufacture and market USSTC brands to adult tobacco consumers in a financially disciplined way, and to provide manufacturing services to PM USA and NuMark for their smokeless products. We are currently seeking a highly qualified Business Unit Leader - Maintenance Facilities to join our Maintenance department located in Nashville, TN.

The successful candidate will manage the activities of salaried and hourly personnel engaged in the maintenance repair and installation of facilities utility and building systems (electricity, compressed air, HVAC, process vacuum, steam, and chilled water). Responsibilities include effective allocation of internal and external technical resources and equipment to meet manufacturing requirements. Lead and assist Natural Work Teams in their development to fulfill business unit/department objectives. Responsible for providing specified environmental conditions; ensuring compliance associated with the fire and electrical codes, refrigerant management, pressure vessel and pressure relief valve codes; and the administration of maintaining plant equipment and building facilities infrastructure to manufacture products in a FDA regulated environment.

Specific accountabilities include:
  • Manage maintenance activities on facility systems to provide reliable and continuous electricity, compressed air, HVAC, process vacuum, steam and chilled water for operations, in addition to a sound building infrastructure.
  • Manage resources and staffing levels within the business unit to address maintenance issues, work order completions and other maintenance related activities. Meet production, compliance, team, and Maintenance Excellence processes to achieve objectives or goals.
  • Manage and direct HVAC, Pipefitters, and Powerhouse Technicians in accordance with the organization's policies, mission, and values. Manage assigned resources and staffing levels within the business unit to address maintenance issues, work order completions and other maintenance related activities. Provides development plans to improve their technical skills and abilities.
  • Coordinating activities with municipalities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes associated with the utility systems.
  • Coordinates maintenance and planned activities of business unit with manufacturing team members and support resources to meet established schedules and assure effective execution of work processes
  • Develops and shares relevant information to support and focus problem solving and process improvement efforts of Natural Work Teams in line with key measures, business goals, and strategic initiatives
  • Determine team developmental needs and implement solutions focused on problem solving, continuous improvement and decision making skills to support a sustained self managed team. Adherence to collective bargaining agreement.
  • Analyze key measures and contributing factors to identify problems/validate root causes, communicate findings, and propose options/recommendations to business unit teams.
  • Lead teams to achieve safety, quality, productivity, and cost goals within functional areas. Lead Natural Work Teams in understanding and translating functional or business strategies into tactical implementation plans within the business unit.


Specific Skills

Qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience in a related technical field. Knowledge of facility utilities systems to include steam generation, chillers, compressed air, vacuum, and building systems; manufacturing processes, manufacturing equipment, maintenance theory and processes is required. Seven years prior facility maintenance experience with three years supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment; Familiarity and experience in the principles of Maintenance Excellence, Quality Systems, Root Cause Analysis and ISO in a FDA regulated manufacturing operation.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coach and lead employees as well as consultants, vendors, suppliers, engineers, and outside contractors in a team based environment
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple and changing priorities and make technical decisions using independent judgment under time constraints with minimal supervision as required
  • Ability to draw on technical knowledge and experience to troubleshoot and resolve equipment and/or facility infrastructure problems, identify root cause and apply logic/deductive reasoning to develop and implement lasting solutions to met production demands. Excellent knowledge of fire, electrical and pressure vessel codes required.
  • Strong communication, technical writing and leadership skills with the ability to effectively lead technical project teams, negotiate and build consensus for resources, technical problem solving and solutions with peers, subordinates and management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) software and database applications to track performance and generate reports
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, diagrams, equipment manuals, specifications and similar technical documentation. Excellent technical knowledge of welding, painting, and lubrication procedures and practices in a regulatory environment is required.
  • Experience with fiduciary and management of fixed budgets is required along with proficient use of numerous software applications.
  • Must be able to perform the duties within a manufacturing environment. Must be able to work on all shifts when necessary and/or 12 hour shifts. Must be able to work at elevated heights and experience using all types of heavy lift equipment, cranes and hoist.
