Assistant Director, US Health Economics Outcomes Research

The primary responsibilities of this role, Assistant Director U.S. Health Economics Outcomes Research, are to:


  • Represent the Health Economics Outcomes Research (HEOR) function on the team;
  • Be responsible for making recommendations and contributions regarding HEOR related activities and studies;
  • Be the responsible contact in HEOR to all in-house and external partners for each assigned product;
  • Develop health economic and health-related quality-of-life expertise in the assigned therapeutic areas;
  • Be a project leader, by coordinating activities and functions of people from various disciplines across the project team;
  • Establish project priorities to meet all deadlines for the project, and identify and help his/her supervisor resolve conflicts with other projects;
  • Consult and negotiate with Marketing Product Managers and Associate Medical Directors in the development of plans for each drug;
  • Serve as the principal contact (for each assigned project) to marketing, managed care, scientific affairs, sales, and medical with respect to all issues of cost-effectiveness and outcomes trial design, execution, analysis, reporting, and interpretation;
  • Meet regularly with Medical and Marketing departments during study development and execution to uncover possible inconsistencies and misalignments of the protocol with the marketing and sales strategies, and resolve the problems in a way that meets the marketing and sales objectives and protects the scientific integrity of the studies;
  • Review Case Study Reports (CRFs) on an ongoing basis, for completeness and accuracy of cost-effectiveness and outcome data;
  • Verify that database is complete and accurate upon study completion;
  • Work with designated Epidemiologist and the Scientific Systems Analyst in planning the analysis and model building sections of the protocol;
  • Perform economic analysis using scientifically appropriate methodology;
  • Write reports which constitute a part of submissions to the FDA and other external review bodies. These reports explain the experimental design relevance and generalizability of results. Reports must be well conceived and well written in order to meet close scrutiny;
  • Work closely with Marketing Product Manager to ensure the publication and use of results of cost-effectiveness and outcomes projects;
  • Work with the Director of Health Economics and Outcomes Research to coordinate international activities for assigned products, and to ensure that training needs are met for both internal and external audiences;
  • Consult with consultants and investigators and review the literature to ensure that state-of-the-art methods are introduced and employed within the department.

Required Qualifications:


  • An educational background of a Pharm.D., MS.c., Ph.D. or other equivalent degree (foreign countries) in the healthcare field and more specifically in health economics, outcomes research, epidemiology, economics or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in conducting RLE and economic studies in the pharmaceutical industry;
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and analyze studies within the health care field;
  • Must have good written and oral presentation skills;
  • Must be a self- starter with the ability to maintain high productivity with supervision;
  • Must be creative and able to handle a variety of projects simultaneously and must have excellent planning skills for the management and development of HEOR plans that will comprise several studies and will require careful staging of projects over time;
  • Must display strong project management skills, from design to completion, with emphasis on timely achievement of agreed deliverables;
  • Strong scientific and technical skills with a demonstrated ability to understand the design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of outcomes studies;
  • Minimum of 10–20% travel is required.
